What is it like to be a building tradesperson in Toulouse?
In Toulouse, occupying a parking space or the road for a job requires a traffic or parking order (arrêté). The application is filed online with the City, or with the Réglementation Circulation unit at the Campus Trafic. The lead time is five working days for a parking occupation, raised to ten days if traffic is affected.
On cost, the City states a fee of €5 per space per day in paid zones. Sundays and public holidays are excluded. It is calculated over the whole period requested. Once you have the order, you must put up no-parking signs at least twenty-four hours ahead. You must also inform the municipal police with photos and display the order under the windscreen. Occupations for scaffolding or a skip with no ground anchoring fall under a parking permit. Those that affect the ground fall under a road-works permission. The works must follow the Toulouse Métropole Chantier propre charter.
Pricing each road occupation from the quote protects a job's margin: the fee is billed over the whole period requested, used or not.
- Application lead time: 5 working days for parking, 10 days if traffic is disrupted.
- Fee: €5 per space per day in paid zones, excluding Sundays and public holidays.
- After the order: signs put up 24 h ahead, municipal police informed, order displayed under the windscreen.
Which road fees should you watch on your Toulouse job sites?
The wrong VAT rate on a quote
Work in a home more than two years old is at 10%, energy renovation at 5.5%, new build at 20%. Since 1 March 2025, oil or gas boilers are at 20%. Without a customer attestation, the reduced rate can be challenged.
Reverse charge in subcontracting
When you work as a subcontractor for another company, you invoice without VAT and the main contractor declares the VAT. Charging VAT by mistake creates a double payment and a possible tax reassessment.
Sites that are profitable… on paper
Without tracking per site, overrun hours and materials stay invisible. The annual accounts show an overall profit, yet some sites lose money. You then keep pricing your quotes on wrong assumptions.
A parking fee billed over the whole period
The City bills each space taken out of use for the entire period requested, even if the job moves faster than planned. Asking for too much is expensive. A realistic job schedule, compared with the road cost, avoids paying for unused days.
